How to Use the VAT / GST Calculator

  1. Select the country so the calculator can apply the standard VAT rate and currency used in the tool.
  2. Choose the user type: company/business entity for trial-balance matching, or individual/freelancer for a simpler workflow.
  3. Enter sales transactions and classify them as standard-rated, export sales, or exempt sales.
  4. Enter purchases and expenses, and specify whether each amount is tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive.
  5. Add prior-period adjustments if needed, then review the draft tax declaration and the net VAT result.

Practical VAT Calculation Example

If taxable sales are 1,000 excluding VAT / GST and the VAT rate is 15%, output VAT equals 150 and the invoice total becomes 1,150. If taxable purchases are 500 excluding VAT / GST, input VAT equals 75. In this example, the estimated net VAT payable is 75 before any adjustments or carried-forward balances.

Taxable sales 1,000 + VAT 150
Taxable purchases 500 + VAT 75
Net VAT 150 - 75 = 75 payable

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I calculate VAT when the amount is tax-inclusive?

Yes. Choose “Tax Inclusive” as the amount type, and the tool will estimate the net value and tax amount automatically.

What is the difference between output VAT and input VAT?

Output VAT is the VAT calculated on sales. Input VAT is the VAT paid on purchases and expenses that may be deductible depending on local tax rules.

Can I use the result as an official tax return?

No. The result is an educational draft and should be reviewed against official rules and by a qualified accountant or tax advisor before any filing.
